How to Make Your Website Easier for AI Search to Cite
In shortLet AI crawlers in, answer questions directly near the top of the page, make it obvious who you are and what you offer, and keep classic SEO strong — AI search tools rely heavily on search indexes.
1. Allow the crawlers
Check that robots.txt, your firewall and CDN don’t block bots like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended — unless you’ve decided to.
2. Answer first, explain after
Start key sections with a direct one- or two-sentence answer, then the detail. That’s the format AI answers quote.
3. Be a clear entity
Consistent name, role and location across your site and profiles. Use Person and Organization schema, an About page with credentials, and links to your profiles.
4. Structure content
Descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables. Pages that are easy for people to scan are easy for models to extract.
5. Show evidence
Specific numbers, original data, dates and sources. Generic content has nothing worth citing.
6. Keep technical SEO strong
AI search features usually start from a search index. If a page isn’t indexed — see crawlability vs indexability — it’s unlikely to be cited.
7. Update regularly
Fresh “last updated” dates on maintained pages signal current information.
