Core Web Vitals Quick Wins for WordPress Sites

In shortMost WordPress sites fail Core Web Vitals because of one heavy hero image, too many plugins and fonts or ads that shift the layout. Fix those three first.

Core Web Vitals are Google’s user-experience metrics: LCP (how fast the main content appears), INP (how fast the page responds to taps and clicks) and CLS (how much the layout jumps). Good targets: LCP under 2.5 s, INP under 200 ms, CLS under 0.1.

LCP quick wins

  • Compress the hero image and serve WebP or AVIF. A 2 MB banner is the most common culprit.
  • Don’t lazy-load the hero image. Add fetchpriority=”high” to it instead.
  • Use page caching and a CDN.
  • Preload the main web font, and use font-display: swap.

INP quick wins

  • Remove plugins you don’t use. Every slider, popup and chat widget adds JavaScript.
  • Delay non-essential scripts (chat, analytics extras) until user interaction.
  • Avoid heavy page-builder animations on mobile.

CLS quick wins

  • Set width and height on images and embeds.
  • Reserve space for ads and cookie banners.
  • Avoid injecting content above existing content after load.

Measure the right thing

Lab tools like PageSpeed Insights are useful for debugging, but Google ranks on field data from real Chrome users. Check the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console and focus on page groups marked “Poor”.

When it’s the theme

Some themes load 1 MB of CSS and JavaScript on every page. If quick wins don’t move the numbers, the theme is the problem — a lighter rebuild may be cheaper than endless optimisation. My 1–5 page website service is one way to start fresh.

Speed is one of 16 areas in my technical & on-page SEO audit, with the exact elements slowing each template.
