How to Audit Your Backlink Profile in 30 Minutes
In shortCount referring domains, not links. Check whether the sites linking to you are real, relevant and getting traffic. Then fix lost links pointing to 404 pages — the fastest win in off-page SEO.
Step 1: Export your links (5 minutes)
In Google Search Console, open Links → Top linking sites and export. Free versions of commercial backlink tools add more data, but Search Console is the source Google itself shows you.
Step 2: Referring domains (5 minutes)
Ten links from ten different relevant websites beat a thousand links from one directory. Note how many unique domains link to you and how that compares with competitors — more on that in competitor link gap analysis.
Step 3: Quality check (10 minutes)
Open your top 20 linking sites and ask:
- Is it a real site with real content and visitors?
- Is it related to your industry or location?
- Is the link inside content, or in a footer or sidebar of every page?
Step 4: Anchor text (5 minutes)
Natural profiles are mostly brand names, URLs and generic words. If most anchors are exact keywords like “best SEO company Dhaka”, that pattern looks manipulative.
Step 5: Lost links and 404s (5 minutes)
Find pages on your site that have backlinks but now return 404. Redirect each to the most relevant live page. You recover link value immediately.
Red flags
- Hundreds of links from unrelated foreign-language sites.
- Sitewide links from link farms.
- A sudden spike of links you didn’t build.
Most sites don’t need a disavow file — read when to disavow before you upload one.
